  • Archbishop’s award for Cumbrian Lay Reader’s 62 years of church service

    The Archbishop of Canterbury has honoured a Cumbrian church Reader for his 62 years’ service to local parishes.

    Melvyn Redgers receives the Canterbury Cross for Services to the Church of England, for outstanding continuous service in the vocation of Lay Reader since 1958.

    He joins Songs of Praise presenter Pam Rhodes in being honoured in this year’s Lambeth Awards, the fifth year of the awards. Read more

  • New Theological College planned for the north west of England

    The Bishops of Carlisle and Penrith warmly endorse the proposed provision of a new theological college in, and for, the north west.

    “We believe it is necessary and important,” they said, today, “to develop theological training which resonates with our diverse context. These proposals will build on the outstanding foundations laid by our current three institutions, and is a result of their success.

    “It will be unique for the north west and it will enable our very different dioceses to work together and to make use of some of the positive discoveries made during lockdown. We are very excited about what this will mean for Cumbria.”

  • Diocese of Carlisle Ordinations 2020

    Seven soon-to-be curates are set to start ministry despite the coronavirus pandemic forcing the cancellation of a planned ordination service.

    All were due to be ordained Deacon by the Bishop of Carlisle at Carlisle Cathedral tomorrow (Saturday, 27 June) but the coronavirus has meant the service has had to be rearranged. The ordinations are now set to take place at the Cathedral on Saturday 26 September.

  • Reopening of church buildings for public worship

    The Bishop of Carlisle has welcomed the Prime Minister’s announcement that church buildings in the diocese can reopen for public worship and for weddings from Saturday 4 July.

    This afternoon, the Rt Rev James Newcome has written to all clergy detailing the further easing of lockdown restrictions for places of worship, as set out by Boris Johnson in his statement to the House of Commons. Small weddings – for up to 30 people – will also be possible from the same date.

  • Diocese sets up Task Group to secure future mission

    A special Task Group has been set up to secure the long-term missional sustainability of the Diocese of Carlisle – the Church of England in Cumbria – post COVID-19.

    The Financial Planning Task Group is chaired by the Bishop of Carlisle, the Rt Rev James Newcome, and has ten other members including the Bishop of Penrith, clergy and members of the Diocesan Board of Finance (DBF).

    In the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, its focus is the sustained growth of church of every kind in the Diocese of Carlisle, supporting mission, ministry and the ecumenical God for All Vision Refresh.

  • Funerals may resume in churches from next week

    From next week funerals in church buildings may resume in the Diocese of Carlisle – the Church of England in Cumbria – subject to guidance around the coronavirus being adhered to.

    The announcement comes after the House of Bishops met yesterday and agreed that funerals may be held in churches from Monday 15 June.

  • Church prayers around village school as it prepares to reopen

    Church members in a Cumbrian village are set to pray around their primary school as it prepares to reopen following the coronavirus lockdown.

    Members of Christ Church in Great Broughton plan to lead prayers outside Broughton Primary on Sunday evening ahead of lessons restarting the following day.

    Ten people from across the Diocese of Carlisle – the Church of England in Cumbria - have been chosen for ordination training.

    The number represents a recent high for the Diocese, with the candidates due to begin their training this year.

  • Carlisle Cathedral bathed in blue for the NHS

    Carlisle Cathedral has been bathed in blue in support of our county’s key workers and the NHS.

    The ancient building’s north and east faces were transformed on Thursday night from 8pm to 11pm with special messages of support projected onto the façades and roof.

    It came as tens of thousands of people across Cumbria also took to their doorsteps to clap for carers as part of the weekly tribute to key workers.

  • Bishops James’ statement regarding church buildings

    In light of the House of Bishops’ agreement in principle to a phased approach to lifting restrictions to church access, in time and in parallel with the Government’s approach, the Bishop of Carlisle, the Rt Rev James Newcome, has issued the following statement.

    Bishop James said: “The coronavirus pandemic has had a terrible effect across the world, wreaking death and disruption. So many people have lost their lives; so many families have lost cherished ones. I continue to pray for them all, for those who lead and govern at this time and for the NHS staff who continue to work so hard providing frontline care. It has been an unprecedented time.
