The following statement is released on behalf of the Bishop of Carlisle, the Rt Rev James Newcome, following today’s announcement by Buckingham Palace of the death of His Royal Highness Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh:
“We are all deeply sorry to hear of the death of His Royal Highness Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. When I recall him and his long years of public service three words come to my mind: loyalty, fortitude and humour.

in Latest NewsStatement: The Rev Robert Bailey Reference
National Safeguarding Team, NST
Following the conviction of Robert Bailey last year and criticism of the reference supplied by the Bishop of Carlisle, James Newcome, the National Safeguarding Team, NST, carried out an investigation into the bishop’s conduct according to House of Bishops guidelines.
Bishop James cooperated fully with the investigation which concluded there were significant errors of judgement in his handling of this matter. He has accepted an informal rebuke from the Archbishop of York which will remain on file, and he will undergo further safeguarding training before he can resume safeguarding responsibilities as diocesan bishop. He has also issued an apology. The Church takes all safeguarding issues very seriously and is continuing to learn lessons from IICSA which criticised the Church’s response to survivors both at its public hearings and in its final report last October.

The Bishop of Penrith encourages people to find joy in God, be patient in affliction and be faithful in prayer in a New Year’s message filmed as we entered a third national lockdown.
The Rt Rev Dr Emma Ineson delivers her message from Kendal Castle and reflects on the need for people to pray for those who have COVID, our health professionals, teachers, communities, businesses and leaders.
Bishop Emma draws on a passage from Romans 12:12 as the basis for her message: “Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.”

The Bishop of Carlisle praises NHS staff and all care workers in his annual Christmas message filmed at Carlisle’s Cumberland Infirmary.
The Rt Rev James Newcome – the Church of England’s lead bishop on health and medical ethics - talks of the care and support being offered after a year in which the global pandemic placed huge pressures on the health sector.
Bishop James also reveals that he has recently been poorly after testing positive for COVID, though he did not need any hospital treatment and has since returned to his duties after a period of rest and self-isolation.

The final countdown is on to Cumbria’s Big Carol Sing which takes place this weekend.
Across the county scores of people are set to take to their doorsteps to sing the carol Silent Night at 6.15pm on Sunday 20 December.
The mass rendition will form part of a special Christmas programme to be presented by Richard Corrie on BBC Radio Cumbria from 6pm and which churches across Cumbria have heavily promoted.

in Latest NewsO Come All Ye Faithful for Cumbria’s Big Carol Sing
A challenge has been set to create Cumbria’s biggest socially-distanced Christmas carol sing-along.
The Diocese of Carlisle is working in partnership with BBC Radio Cumbria and other churches across the county to run Cumbria’s Big Carol Sing on Sunday 20 December.
The radio station will broadcast a special programme from 6pm that evening, with as many people as possible being asked to sing the carol Silent Night on their doorsteps at 6.15pm. Read more -

Both bishops in the Diocese of Carlisle – the Church of England in Cumbria – have welcomed the launch of a series of extensive resources to support a process of discernment and decision-making on questions of identity, sexuality, relationships and marriage.
The Living in Love and Faith resources have today been published by the Church of England and represent three years’ work by more than 40 people, nationally.

in Latest NewsCumbrian service marks centenary of Unknown Warrior’s burial
A special Cumbrian service will take place on Armistice Day at the grave of the man who selected the body of the Unknown Warrior.
A hundred years ago, Brigadier General Louis John Wyatt – the General Officer in charge of troops in France and Flanders – was asked to choose the body of a serviceman to be buried in the Westminster Abbey tomb.
The Brigadier General eventually retired to Kirkby Lonsdale and is himself buried in St Mary’s churchyard where at 2.30pm on Wednesday 11 November, a small group of people will gather to pay their respects.
