Give a Day volunteers to spruce up children’s play area

A group of volunteers and church leaders are set to help tidy a children’s city centre play area as part of scheme to ‘Give a Day to the City’.

It’s expected that up to 20 people will descend on Bitts Park from 8am tomorrow (Wednesday 30 September) to help wash play equipment and spruce up the grounds.

The #GiveaDayCarlisle project encourages people to offer skills, services or products to help make Carlisle a happier, better place in which to live and work.

It has been developed through partnerships involving Andy Fearon of Carlisle Vineyard Church, members of the HOPE Carlisle team and Carlisle Ambassadors.

The Rev’d Andrew Towner, Vicar of St John’s Houghton with St Peter’s Kingmoor, is a steering committee member for HOPE Carlisle and will help lead the play-ground cleaning.

He said: “As churches we’re in the heart of communities, so it was really important that we get involved in the Give a Day to the City project.

“This is all about looking to make a real difference in Carlisle. As Christians we know that we have received love from God in Jesus, and that love we have been blessed with teaches us to give love away.

“It’s great to be involved in reaching out to others in a whole host of ways and one way will be the tidying up of the kids’ playground.

“This is a really well-loved area for young and old alike. Anything that we can do to maintain the site for the future has got to be good.”

The Bitts Park work is expected to last a morning and will also include trimming and tidying plants and repairing edgings.

Among those helping out will be Chartered Landscape Architect Bruce Walker, of Westwood Landscape, who is a congregation member at St Peter’s Kingmoor and a student from Beaumont College which is attached to James Rennie School.

The clean-up will herald the start of a series of special Give a Day to the City events which will be held this weekend.
