Royal approval for city centre Field of Remembrance

A city centre Field of Remembrance, built in memory of those service men and women who fell for their country, is to receive Royal approval.

The Rev Keith Teasdale in the Field of Remembrance in St Cuthbert's Churchyard Her Royal Highness Princess Alexandra will visit St Cuthbert’s churchyard on Wednesday 15 July at 2pm for an official dedication ceremony.

The Field of Remembrance - the first in Carlisle city centre - was constructed in August 2014 following discussions between St Cuthbert’s vicar, the Rev Keith Teasdale and the Royal British Legion. The Diocese of Carlisle approved the plans for the churchyard plot which includes red sandstone borders and a plinth which will bear a brass plaque commemorating the official opening.

Mr Teasdale, who is also a former Army chaplain, said: “We’re delighted that the project is to be officially recognised in this way.

“For some time we had felt that there was a need for a Field of Remembrance in the city centre and St Cuthbert’s was considered to be the appropriate place for it. It is right and proper that people are still drawn to the city’s various Cenotaphs and it’s heartening that the Rickerby Park Cenotaph has been repaired in recent years.

“Our Field of Remembrance provides another place where people can come for the quiet contemplation of those who have fallen for their country. This need not just be on Remembrance Day but any day of the year.”

A Festival of Remembrance service in 2013, which was organised by the church and the Carlisle and Stanwix branch of the Royal British Legion, raised more than £1,000 towards the project.

Major Paul Chandler from the Royal British Legion said: “It’s wonderful that Her Royal Highness has chosen to be with us for the dedication ceremony.

“We must continue to do all we can to ensure those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for their country, continue to be remembered at every opportunity.”

The Bishop of Penrith, the Rt Rev Robert Freeman will officiate at the dedication ceremony.
